Gruyère takes its name from the stitch it comes from. La Gruyère is one of the 7 districts of the Swiss canton of Fribourg. The first reference to this special cheese dates back to the year 1115, and today this unique cheese is still made according to the traditional recipe.
This beautiful Swiss cheese may also only be called Gruyère if it is made in the La Gruyère region and according to a traditional recipe. Since 2011, this unique regional product has been protected by the European Union.
