Origin of Frisian nail cheese
Nail cheese comes from Friesland, where it originated at the time of the VOC. The cheese was made there from skimmed milk and had little flavor. To give the cheese more flavor, various flavorings were added, including cloves. The cloves provided extra flavor but also a preservative effect. Thus, the cheese could also be taken on long boat trips.

Thanks to the addition of cumin and cloves, this cheese has a unique spicy flavor. The strong spicy taste of the nail cheese makes it ideal for on the cheeseboard, especially if you combine it with a nice Trappist beer or a good port. But for the real fans of a strong spicy cheese, it can also be eaten on a sandwich.
